Markets to get 4,000 metric tonnes of sugar daily, says food minister
LAHORE: The Punjab government has decided to increase the daily supply of sugar to markets from 1,800 metric tonnes to 4,000 metric tonnes, Food Minister Malik Nadeem Kamran said on Monday. Addressing a press conference, he said the step would result in a 135 percent increase in the supply of sugar for domestic consumers. He said the cities and towns getting 40 metric tonnes of sugar would now get 100 metric tonnes of the commodity on a daily basis. On the directives of CM Shahbaz Sharif, the Punjab government had made arrangements to provide 8 million one-kilogramme sugar bags at Rs 40 at Sunday and Friday bazaars in Punjab, he said. “These 8 million sugar bags will be in addition to the 135 percent increased quota of sugar,” he said, adding that the provincial government would bring 8,000 metric tonnes of sugar in the market a day before Eidul Azha. He said the government had decided to seize the entire undeclared stock of sugar mills. He said the Punjab inspector general and home secretary had been assigned to personally monitor the action taken by government agencies against hoarders. Kamran said the crushing season of mills would start from November 13 and the Punjab government had given a deadline of November 15 to sugar mills in this regard. He said action would be taken against sugar mills that would not start their boilers by the deadline. He said the stock available with the government by November 30 would be made available to the domestic consumers. He said 200,000 metric tonnes of sugar imported by the Trading Corporation of Pakistan had reached Karachi, while the government had issued tenders for the import of another 500,000 metric tonnes of raw sugar and 500,000 metric tonnes of white sugar, which would reach by December. staff report
